Pulmonology, sometimes referred to as Respiratory Medicine, is the medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract, as well as secondary prevention (as in the case of tuberculosis). Although considered a branch of internal medicine, it is closely related to intensive care medicine when treating patients who require mechanical ventilation. If surgery is required it is usually performed by thoracic surgery specialists.
