Dermatology (the word derives from the Greek “derma” meaning skin) is a branch of medicine dealing with the skin and its appendages (hair, nails, sweat glands etc). The skin is the largest organ of the body and obviously the most visible. Although many skin diseases are isolated, some are manifestations of internal disease. As such, Dermatologists are knowledgeable about diseases that primarily affect other parts of the body but have some bearing on the condition of the skin and are schooled in aspects of rheumatology (many arthritic diseases can feature skin symptoms and signs), immunology, neurology (the “neurocutaneous syndromes”, such as neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis), infectious diseases (including the diagnosis and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and endocrinology. The study of genetics is also becoming increasingly important.
Dermatology conditions treated at FV Hospital range from acne, birth marks, psoriasis (scaly, red patches), skin cancer, to general problems relating to the skin, hair, nails, mouth, and tongue. Additionally, the FVH Dermatology team has experience in treating many common allergies - many skin conditions are actually allergic reactions, rather than skin diseases.
