General & Digestive Surgery
Encompasses all diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting all organs inside the abdominal cavity from the oesophagus to the colon, including
-
Oesophagus – when the valve between the oesophagus and stomach is damaged, acid from the stomach flows back (refluxes) into the oesophagus causing irritation and sometimes damage to the lining of the oesophagus. This condition is known as GERD (gastroesophagal reflux disease). In some cases the reflux can rise high enough to affect the vocal cords, or even flow into the lungs (called aspiration), causing damage to those tissues and organs.
- Peptic ulcer – this can be either a sore or eroded area in the linings of the digestive tract. Peptic ulcers usually occur in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or in the duodenum (duodenal ulcer) which is the upper region of the small intestine.
- Stomach cancer
- Gall Bladder (stones)
- Pancreatitis
- Liver Cancer
- Spleen
- Appendicitis – is an inflammation of the appendix. It is a very common medical emergency and can occur at any age, normally it occurs between the ages of 10 and 30 years.
- Bowel obstruction
- Colon cancer
- Haemorrhoids
General Surgeons also take care of conditions affecting
- Abdominal Wall - (Hernia)
- Thyroid
Abdominal Diseases – Warning Symptoms
- Chronic or acute pain just below the ribs on the right part of your abdomen is often a symptom that is caused by gall bladder stones.
- Jaundice is generally a sign that your liver, your gall bladder or your pancreas have something, such as stones or a tumour.
- If you bleed when going to the toilet, you may be suffering from haemorrhoids, but it could be something more serious, such as cancer of your intestine
- Acute pain in the lower right of your abdomen could be the main symptom of acute appendicitis requiring immediate surgery.
Thoracic Surgery
This discipline includes all surgery or procedure involving the area of the chest: chest wall and lungs, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders / diseases of the chest, including
Thoracic Diseases – Warning Symptoms
- If you suffer from chronic cough, if you spit blood, if you have difficulty breathing, you may have something wrong with your lungs and you should consult a specialist without delay.
- Sweaty hands are sometimes related to a condition that can be treated by a simple surgical procedure called sympathectomy.
Vascular Surgery
Focuses on the diagnosis and surgical treatment for diseases of the circulatory system and / or disorders of the blood vessels, arteries, and veins from the neck to lower limbs, including
- Arterial bypass
- Aorta aneurysm
- Carotid stenosis
- Leg artery stenosis
- Veins of the limbs – varicose (stripping)
- Arterio-veinous fistulas
Vascular System – Warning Symptoms
- A feeling of heavy legs, particularly at the end of the day, can be caused by varicose (veins) disease, a condition which is easily treated by a simple procedure.
- Walking difficulties, especially if it is painful, can be the sign of arterial problems and must be investigated.
- Sudden paralysis of a leg can actually be caused by a stroke in your brain, that can be caused by an artery in your neck, called the carotid artery, being blocked which leads to a reduction of blood flow to the brain. A relatively simple surgical procedure, if performed quickly, can allow you to completely recover.
