We realize that coming to hospital can be stressful for both child and family. Here at FV Hospital, we encourage participation of family members in the care of the child: having a familiar face nearby, during hospitalization, can help to reduce anxiety and help the child to recover more comfortably.

One relative, preferably a parent, may stay at all times with the child, and over-night for no extra charge.

If your kid is having surgery

Please make sure you are aware of what time your child’s surgery is scheduled. If your child is having surgery in the morning (before 13:00), do not let him or her eat anything after midnight.

If your child is having surgery in the afternoon (after 13:00), he or she must not eat or drink after 07:00.

  • For babies under 6 months old, please speak with your anaesthetist about what time to stop feeding
  • A responsible adult over 18-years old (a legal guardian) must accompany the child during the admission, and is asked to stay in the hospital until after the surgery, to speak with the surgeon if required
  • You may accompany your child to the operating department, but for hygiene reasons, you will not be permitted to enter the operating theatre. You can wait for your child in his or her room, where the nursing staff in the ward will inform you when your child is ready to return. You may also wait outside of the Operating Theatre.

Unfortunately, if your child is “nil by mouth” under doctor’s orders, we cannot allow you to eat in the children’s room, as this may disturb them. We ask for your understanding and compliance in this matter.
