The days of adopting a “wait and see” approach to pregnancy are long gone. Today, many Gen Z mothers-to-be embark on their maternity journey by scouring reviews, touring hospitals, meeting obstetricians, and planning their postnatal recovery well in advance. For this generation, giving birth is no longer simply an ordeal to be endured. It is a milestone to be crafted, optimizing for comfort and safety.
Take 26-year-old Ngoc Dung from Ho Chi Minh City. Before choosing where to have her baby, she immersed herself in online reviews and forums, but went further: registering for hospital tours, attending antenatal classes, and personally meeting obstetricians renowned for their expertise. After much deliberation, she decided on the FV Thomson Maternity Department and placed her trust in the hands of Dr Vo Thi Thanh Van, MSc. So much so that when her obstetrician recommended an emergency cervical cerclage, a procedure to reinforce the cervix and help prevent preterm birth, she remained composed, even ordering bubble tea that same evening.
Dung’s story highlights a growing trend among Gen Z expectant mothers. Rather than waiting until the third trimester to make decisions, more and more young women are proactively visiting hospitals, meeting obstetricians, and equipping themselves with knowledge long before their due date.

At the FV Thomson Maternity Department, staff say they are seeing a noticeable generational shift. Gen Z patients are entering their pregnancies with far more confidence and preparedness than their predecessors. Their phones are filled with pregnancy tracking apps, their social media feeds are curated with shared experiences from other new mothers, and their notebooks are packed with reminders about nutrition, screenings, and key antenatal appointments.

“Rather than simply following instructions, younger patients want to understand the ‘why’ behind a clinical recommendation, the benefits, and which option is right for them,” said Dr Vo Thi Thanh Van of the FV Thomson Maternity Department.
This shift in mindset has turned hospital tours into a standard step in the birth-planning process. Many couples now take time to meet the medical team, understand the care process, and assess the environment firsthand before making a final commitment.
For Ngoc Dung, what ultimately persuaded her to choose FV Thomson was not just the clinical expertise; it was the reassuring sense of being accompanied and supported throughout her pregnancy.
For Gen Z, a safe delivery is just the beginning, the experience matters just as much

Throughout her pregnancy, Dung’s risk of preterm birth was closely monitored and managed. With the right intervention at the right time and a clear care plan in place, she went on to carry her pregnancy to 37 weeks with relative ease.
The day she held her baby in her arms, what she remembered most wasn’t the antenatal appointments or the tests; it was the genuine warmth and support she received. “It felt like I’m being looked after by my family,” she recalls.
If Dung represents the “meticulous planner,” then Nguyen Khiet Tam (28 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) is the “experience-seeker.” Before making her decision, Tam toured several different hospitals. After attending an antenatal class at FV and meeting the medical team, she knew she had found the right place.
What impressed her most wasn’t just the modern facilities. It was the connection she felt with the team throughout her pregnancy.
“The doctors were so warm and attentive. There were times I messaged late at night and still received a helpful, reassuring response,” she said.
In a lovely twist, despite having planned for a caesarean section, her baby had other ideas, choosing to arrive on Vietnam’s Reunification Day (April 30). With the support of the medical team, Tam went on to achieve a successful vaginal delivery.
After the Birth… She Wasn’t Ready to Go Home
For Gen Z mothers-to-be, clinical safety is the baseline, but the quality of the journey is what defines the experience. They want the experience of pregnancy and birth itself to be something worth remembering.
After the birth, Khiet Tam chose to remain at the hospital for a postnatal confinement stay, a period of dedicated rest, recovery, and newborn care support. During her first two weeks postpartum, she received comprehensive care, including newborn support, health monitoring, nutritional guidance, and physical recovery. “I loved it here. Honestly, I wasn’t ready to go home,” she laughed.

From researching pregnancy information and touring hospitals, to curating their postnatal support, Gen Z is approaching motherhood in an entirely different way. More proactive, more discerning, and more invested in being active participants in every decision that affects them and their baby.
Because for this generation, giving birth is no longer just an ordeal to be got through. It is a journey, one to be prepared for thoughtfully from the very beginning, ensuring that the moment of welcoming a new life becomes one of the most memorable chapters of their lives.
