The Urology Department treats all manner of urinary track causes and infections in male and female patients, and, genital related conditions in males with advanced medical and surgical care. Treatment of renal stones

Kidney stones are a very common problem in tropical climates, such as Vietnam. If left untreated, the condition can cause extreme pain and progressive kidney destruction. Since FVH opened in 2003, the Urology Department has gained an impressive reputation through the successful treatment of hundreds of patients through lithotripsy, the most effective and technically advanced technique available.

Using the latest third generation Storz Lithotripsy Shock Wave Therapy unit, the FVH Urology team treat the majority of kidney stone patients with lithotripsy – a painless, and completely non-invasive method which breaks the kidney stones down, through repetitive shock waves. This procedure is usually a one-time treatment which does not require anaesthesia, minimizes discomfort and reduces recovery time to a few hours.

Some renal stones cannot be treated by lithotripsy, advanced surgical techniques are then carried out such as PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) and Laparoscopic Pyelolithotomy.

Since 2012, FV Hospital has provided successful treatments to patients affected with complicated calculi by application of mini PCNL. Under fluoroscopic and X-ray guidance, the kidney were punctured, mainly through the midkidney calix, the other caliceal accesses were also feasible, depending on the location of stone. After dilating the access, doctors utilize the small ureteroscopy and lithoclast to fragment complicated calculi. If necessary, sandwich therapy and multiple percutaneus accesses are advocated after .

The injury recovers quickly after catheter is removed in several days after the surgery. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, Head of FVH’s Urology, said that Mini-PCNL is a good and safe option for renal complicated stone treatment. With the technical improvements and Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), it will further the operation efficiency and stone-free rate.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is already the second largest cancer killer among men worldwide. There is a growing cause for concern in Vietnam. Environmental factors including lifestyle, dietary changes, increased life expectancy and a lack of awareness for prostate cancer screening are all contributing to a rising incidence of this condition in men over 50 years old in Vietnam.

FVH’s prostate cancer unit comprises one of the leading such treatment centres in South-east Asia and a pioneer of laparoscopy surgery in Vietnam. Laparoscopy surgery, also known as “keyhole’ surgery, is a minimally invasive hi-tech procedure, employing the use of a small, high-resolution video camera during surgery. Recovery time is greatly reduced, due to minimal parietal tissue damage involved during treatment.

The FVH comprehensive cancer unit offers a complete range of services including full screening, ultrasound guided biopsies and nuclear medicine for detecting bone metastasis and radiotherapy.

Female Urology

Urinary stress incontinence is a very common problem among women over 40 years old. However, major medical improvements in the last fifteen years have helped in the management and treatment of this uncomfortable problem. Now there are several minimally invasive surgical procedures available that enable patients to lead a normal life again. Due to the minimally invasive surgical techniques performed, most patients can be managed within a day’s hospitalization.

The most common technique to alleviate stress incontinence utilizes TVT (tension free vaginal tape) to attach to the stomach wall.

FVH now has an Uro-dynamic Clinic which is especially installed with state-of-the-art equipment including the latest diagnostic machines for examining and treating patients suffering from urinary tract incontinence and bladder dysfunction.
