Contrary to what its name suggests, General Surgery is actually a surgical specialty. General surgery is a discipline that includes, but is not restricted to surgical procedures performed on the intestines, liver, colon, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach and thyroid gland.
The department is staffed by experienced surgeons providing general and emergency surgical services. FV Hospital has the expertise and equipment to administer both open and laparoscopic surgery.
Laparoscopic (or “keyhole”) surgery is recognised as an integral and crucial skill that is developing across the entirety of general surgical practice.
Operations are being carried out increasingly by minimally invasive techniques that offer patients less pain, better outcomes and shorter postoperative recovery. A special camera known as a laparoscope, as well as specialised surgical instruments are passed through the incisions to facilitate surgery. Virtually every abdominal operation can be done by this route
- Appendectomy (removal of appendix, can be performed laparoscopically)
- Cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) and biliary surgery
- Pancreas surgery
- Colon and rectal surgery: Our oncology specialists provide a multi-disciplinary approach to colorectal cancer management. Removal of part or all the colon can be performed laparoscopically
- Liver surgery – FV Hospital is a centre of excellence for the treatment of liver cancer which provides at your disposal all therapeutic options (surgery, radiofrequency ablation, and chemo-embolization) and a variety of specialists (gastro-entero-hepatologists, general surgeons, interventional radiologists and oncologists) who provide a multi-disciplinary approach to your case
- Adrenalectomy (removal of the adrenal gland)
- Gastric and oesophageal surgery
- Haemorrhoid surgery
- Hernia repair (can be performed laparoscopically)
- Surgery of the skin and soft tissues
- Thyroid surgery
- Thoracoscopic sympathectomy (laparoscopic surgical treatment of sweaty palms syndrome)
The outpatient department is located in the Surgical Centre on the 3rd floor of the V Building. Patients are hospitalised in the Surgical Ward situated on the 6th floor of the F Building
The Imaging Department provides diagnostic and treatment procedures:
- Ultrasound, CT scanner and MRI investigations
- CT or ultrasound guided biopsies
- Biliary drainage
- Tapping and drainage of abscesses
- Treatment of intussusceptions for children
The FV Hospital’s Operating Theatre is a sophisticated area with 9 operating rooms manned by a team of highly qualified nurses and anaesthesiologists. General surgeons have at their disposal a variety if highly specialised tools:
- Optima – Electro Surgical Unit from Lamidey – Unique electrosurgical system helping the surgeons to “weld” vascular (artery and veins) walls (“vessel sealing”)– resulting in minimal blood loss and faster recovery for patients.
- Harmonic Scalpel – Using ultrasound technology, a harmonic scalpel is used to cut tissues while simultaneously sealing the edges of the cut. It is a valuable tool for numerous surgical procedures, including cholecystectomy, bowel resection, and adhesiolysis and is associated with less postoperative pain and an earlier return to oral intake and regular activities.
- OEC 9900 C-Arm from GE – One of the best C-Arm system available internationally, the OEC-9900 offers unique high quality image at minimum dose, one of the key safety issue for the patients..
- Sonopet Ultrasonic Aspirator from Stryker – Gold standard for soft tissue procedures. This equipment offers high level of patient safety in all types of delicate surgical procedures.
- Avanced CS2 Anesthesia Workstation from GE – The safest technology available for anesthesia and patient monitoring during surgery.
- Minimal invasive surgical equipment (light source, 3 chip HD camera processor, and specific surgical instruments)
HI-TECH PATHOLOGY LABORATORY, BANGKOK
