Dr Nguyen Thi Thanh Minh, MSc, Specialist Level I, shared practical knowledge and skills to further support nurses in advising and supporting mothers and babies

Benefits of breastfeeding for infants: Provides easily digestible nutrients, helps reduce the risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, and supports brain and immune system development during the first months of life.

Benefits for mothers: Supports postpartum recovery, promotes uterine involution, reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and strengthens the mother-baby bond.

Advice for special cases: Addressed questions about breastfeeding when a mother has HIV or hepatitis B. Nurses were guided on how to assess each case and provide appropriate advice based on measures to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

Practical breastfeeding skills: Updated guidance on correct positioning and latching techniques to support effective feeding and reduce common maternal problems such as nipple soreness, cracked nipples and mastitis.

Breast milk storage: Guidance on the correct expression, storage and use of breast milk, including including the use of a dedicated refrigerator, appropriate temperature settings, and recommended storage durations for refrigerated and frozen breast milk.

Through this training programme, FV’s nursing team strengthened the essential knowledge and skills needed to advise, guide and support mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey. As a Mother and Baby-Friendly Hospital, FV continues to enhance comprehensive maternal and child healthcare, with breastfeeding support forming an important part of this care.
