FV Hospital has introduced the Auryon Laser Atherectomy System, an advanced minimally invasive technology used to treat severely calcified arteries in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD).

The Auryon Laser Atherectomy System
An effective treatment for severe calcification and in-stent restenosis
The Auryon Laser Atherectomy System is designed to reopen blood vessels severely narrowed or blocked by PAD. The technology is particularly effective in treating complex conditions, including chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI), blockages in the arteries of the legs, blood clots, and in-stent restenosis, where an artery becomes narrowed again after stent placement.
Early treatment using the Auryon system may help prevent serious complications such as tissue damage that could lead to amputation, severe infective (sepsis), or cardiovascular complications related to blood clots.
During the launch event, FV doctors and international experts discussed the challenges involved in treating PAD. Dr Luong Ngoc Trung (MSc, Specialist Level II), Head of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Intervention at FV Hospital, shared clinical insights on the treatment of serevr calcification and in-stent restenosis in peripheral artery disease.

“By using precise minimally invasive techniques to treat complex calcified blockages, we can improve treatment outcomes and help reduce the risk of amputation for high-risk patients,” said Dr Trung.
355 nm Laser Technology Helps Treat Severe Calcification While Preserving Blood Vessels
Dr Kalpana Vijaykumar, Consultant in the Department of General Surgery at Sengkang General Hospital, Singapore, shared her clinical experience using the Auryon Laser Atherectomy System. The technology can treat different types of arterial blockage, from blood clots to severe calcification, while helping preserve the natural structure of blood vessels
Dr Vijaykumar also explained the system’s technical features, including its 355 nm laser wavelength and specialised catheter sizes (ranging from 2.0 mm to 2.35 mm). Together, these features allow the system to effectively treat heavily calcified blockages while minimising damage to surrounding blood vessels.

Dr Kalpana also highlighted the benefits of combining the Auryon laser system with Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), which helps doctors clearly assess the inside of blood vessels and perform treatment more precisely. At FV, doctors also use Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), an advanced imaging technology that provides highly detailed views inside the blood vessels.

Experts participate in a simulation session during the Auryon system introduction.
The introduction of the Auryon laser system expands FV’s treatment options for patients with arterial blockages, including PAD and chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI). With earlier and more precise treatment, patients may benefit from improved mobility, better quality of life, and a lower risk of amputation.
