Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of neurological disorders that affect movement, muscle tone, and posture, caused by damage to the developing brain, often before or during birth, though it can occur in early childhood up to 2 years of age. The talk will highlight the topology, motor/movement disorders, etiologies, neuroimaging and co-morbidities associated with CP.

“Cerebral Palsies” or Cerebral palsy mimics are heterogeneous disorders that present with similar symptoms but have different underlying causes. These mimics can include genetic, metabolic, or neuromuscular disorders. Accurate diagnosis is crucial, as some mimics are treatable or progressive, requiring different management strategies than CP. The talk will cover clinical evaluation, neuroimaging, and relevant investigations to distinguish CP from its mimics.

Understanding cerebral palsy is essential for developing effective treatment and support strategies including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medications, and sometimes surgical interventions. This seminar aims to provide comprehensive insights into the causes, symptoms, and management of CP, fostering a collaborative approach to improve the quality of life for those affected.

Dr Yeo Tong Hong

Dr Yeo Tong Hong is a Paediatrician currently practising at Paediatric & Neurology Clinic, Thomson.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr Yeo specialises in managing a wide range of general and neurological paediatric conditions. His expertise includes treating seizures, epilepsy, movement disorders, cerebral palsy, and neurodevelopmental disorders. He also has a special interest in complex motor disorders and neuro-rehabilitation, having pioneered several advanced therapeutic services during his tenure in the UK and Singapore.

Dr Yeo obtained his medical degree and completed his postgraduate training in Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology in the UK. He holds a Completion of Certified Training (CCT) in Paediatric Neurology & Paediatrics from the Royal College of Paediatric & Child Health (RCPCH) and General Medical Council (UK). He was elected a Fellow of the RCPCH in 2014.

Throughout his career, Dr Yeo has made significant contributions to paediatric neurology, including setting up integrated neuro-rehabilitation services in Singapore and leading national programmes in the UK. He is also actively involved in clinical research and medical education, holding academic positions with SingHealth Duke-NUS, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Dr Yeo Tong Hong is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre, and Mount Alvernia Hospital.
