ADA 2026: Combining medication, lifestyle changes, and technology for effective diabetes management

September 21, 2026

The FV Wednesday session held at the end of July provided an in-depth update on “ADA standards of care in diabetes 2026”. The talk was presented by Dr Bui Thi Bich Khue, MSc, Endocrinologist and Deputy Head of Internal Medicine Department at FV Hospital.

According to Dr Bui Thi Bich Khue, MSc, correctly identifying the type of diabetes from the start is crucial, as each patient requires a tailored treatment approach. An accurate diagnosis enables doctors to select the most suitable medications and treatment plans, helping patients manage blood glucose effectively and minimise the risk of long-term complications.

The ADA (American Diabetes Association) 2026 Guidelines strongly emphasise personalised care. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to medication. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s individual health status, taking into account factors such as overweight, obesity, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and liver disease, to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Alongside appropriate medication, the ADA 2026 Guidelines continue to stress the vital role of lifestyle modifications and preventive care. Eating a balanced diet, such as the Mediterranean or DASH diet, exercising regularly, supporting mental wellbeing, and undergoing early screening for osteoporosis can all help patients achieve better blood glucose control and a better quality of life. For patients observing Ramadan fasting, medication regimens must also be closely monitored and adjusted by their doctor to ensure safety.

Discussing the role of technology in modern diabetes care, Dr Bui Thi Bich Khue, MSc, noted: “Advanced technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, insulin pumps and automated insulin delivery systems, can make blood glucose management easier and safer for patients.” These innovations reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), minimise the need for routine finger-prick tests, and significantly improve long-term chronic disease management.

At FV Hospital’s Diabetes Unit, our medical team, including Dr Bui Thi Bich Khue, MSc, Dr Nguyen Nhat Nam, PhD, and Dr Nguyen Huu Man, Specialist Level I, prioritises personalised treatment plans for every patient. By combining medication, lifestyle changes, and modern technology, we help patients control blood glucose levels effectively, reduce the risk of complications, and enhance their overall quality of life.
