Update on bronchial artery chemoembolisation (BACE) for lung cancer treatment

October 6, 2026

UDuring the FV Wednesday academic seminar on 9 September 2026, experts at FV discussed the topic “Bronchial artery chemoembolisation in advanced non-small cell lung cancer”. The session was presented by Dr Nguyen The Hien, Specialist Level I, Imaging and Interventional Radiology Department.

Bronchial artery chemoembolisation (BACE) is an approach that targets tumours via their blood supply. “Instead of circulating medicine throughout the entire body and waiting for it to reach the tumour, BACE follows the tumour’s ‘blood supply route’ to deliver treatment directly to the target area while helping to control the blood flow feeding the tumour,” shared Dr Hien.

With this approach, BACE helps deliver medication closer to the tumour, helps control its blood supply, and helps manage certain disease-related symptoms, such as coughing up blood.

The Imaging and Interventional Radiology Department at FV currently performs a range of endovascular interventions, including uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE), prostatic artery embolisation (PAE), and transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) for liver cancer. With BACE, Dr Hien described the use of an interventional vascular approach for advanced non-small cell lung cancer, in which bronchial and tumour-feeding arteries are identified to deliver medication directly to the lesion.

At FV, cancer cases are discussed weekly at the Tumour Board, where multidisciplinary experts, including specialists in oncology, surgery, internal medicine, vascular intervention, nutrition, and physiotherapy, evaluate and develop a tailored treatment plan. As part of this approach, techniques such as BACE can be considered within a comprehensive treatment strategy, aiming to provide comprehensive care for patients.

WHAT IS FV WEDNESDAY?

FV Wednesday is a regular session series held two to three times a month on Wednesdays. It offers a collaborative space for doctors to meet, share insights, and learn from one another. By discussing complex clinical cases and advanced techniques, the programme helps maintain healthcare quality in line with JCI standards in Vietnam.

Next Session (12:15 – 23 September 2026)

– Topic 1: Brand Positioning Announcement FV Hospital “A Standard of Medical Excellence” – Ms Nguyen Thi Le Thu, Marketing & Business Development Director

– Topic 2: Pelvic congestion syndromes – Dr Luong Ngoc Trung, MSc, Specialist Level II, Head of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Interventions.
