Laser Technology and Innovation

Fotona laser systems and VISIA skin imaging support tailored treatment planning.

FV Hospital is equipped with two Fotona laser systems, Fotona SP Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker. Used alongside one another, these systems offer different wavelengths and treatment options, allowing dermatologists to select the most appropriate laser for each skin concern.

FV also uses the VISIA skin imaging and analysis system to assess the skin before treatment and monitor changes during the treatment process.

The laser systems at FV carry the CE mark, indicating that they meet applicable European requirements for health, safety and environmental protection.

At FV Hospital, VISIA supports the dermatologist’s assessment in three key ways:

  • Identifying features that may not be visible to the naked eye: Captures and analyses underlying pigmentation, sun damage, pores and visible blood vessels.
  • Supporting treatment planning: The imaging results, combined with a direct examination by your dermatologist, help identify which concerns should be prioritised and whether laser treatment should be postponed.
  • Monitoring progress: Baseline images are stored so that changes can be tracked and results compared at different stages of treatment.

Fotona StarWalker combines ultra-short nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses. This allows your dermatologist to tailor treatment settings to the type and depth of pigmentation and your skin condition.

The system offers two key features:

  • Breaking down pigment through a photoacoustic effect: The laser creates a mechanical effect that breaks pigment particles into much smaller fragments, while limiting heat exposure to the surrounding skin. This approach is designed to reduce the risk of burns and scarring compared with older technologies.
  • Gradual clearance of pigment: After the pigment particles are broken down, the body gradually clears the fragments. As treatment progresses, areas of pigmentation may become less noticeable over successive sessions.

Treatment applications: Melasma, freckles, age spots, post-acne marks and certain congenital pigmented birthmarks, as well as body tattoo and cosmetic tattoo removal.

Fotona SP Dynamis combines two laser technologies that target different depths of the skin. Its Variable Square Pulse (VSP) technology allows the dermatologist to adjust the laser delivery, from gentle heating to precise tissue removal.

  • Nd:YAG 1064 nm – Deeper treatment: Penetrates deeper into the tissue to generate a controlled thermal effect while limiting damage to the skin’s surface. Its relatively low absorption by melanin makes it a useful option for treating selected concerns in darker skin tones.
  • Er:YAG 2940 nm – Surface resurfacing: Removes thin layers of skin with precision while transferring relatively little heat to surrounding tissue, helping the dermatologist control the treatment area.

Depending on your skin condition, your dermatologist may use one wavelength or combine both in a treatment plan.

Tailored to Your Skin

Laser settings are not applied in the same way to everyone. Your dermatologist adjusts the energy level according to your skin tone, the treatment area and the condition being treated. This individualised approach is particularly important for darker skin tones that are more prone to pigmentation changes after treatment.

Controlled, Targeted Treatment

Laser energy is directed towards the area being treated, helping limit its effect on surrounding healthy skin. For laser hair reduction, the system also offers dedicated settings designed to help manage heat and discomfort during treatment.
