At the FV Wednesday session on 30 September, FV Hospital’s medical team discussed the role of EOB-MRI in evaluating liver lesions, from diagnosis to treatment planning.
The session featured presentations by Dr Pham Dinh Khuong, Specialist Level I, Acting Head of the Imaging & Interventional Radiology Department at FV Hospital, and Dr Le Duy Mai Huyen, PhD, Deputy Head of the Imaging Department at University Medical Center HCMC.
The session also brought together experts, including Dr Tran Cong Duy Long, PhD, Head of the Liver Transplant Unit at University Medical Centre HCMC, experts from Bayer, the developer of Primovist, a liver-specific contrast agent, as well as doctors and technicians from FV’s specialties involved in the care of liver, biliary and pancreatic conditions.
During the session, Dr Pham Dinh Khuong, Specialist Level I, presented “Liver MRI with EOB”. This MRI technique uses a liver-specific contrast agent and is performed on a 3.0 Tesla MRI system. The technique helps doctors better characterise liver lesions, particularly small ones, supporting diagnosis, treatment planning and post-treatment monitoring.
“The EOB-MRI technique gives doctors a more comprehensive and accurate perspective on the nature of liver lesions. When combined with standardised technology and close multidisciplinary collaboration, it can support safe, personalised and highly effective treatment for patients,” said Dr Khuong.
The session continued with Dr Le Duy Mai Huyen, PhD, addressed the question: “When do doctors need to request an EOB-MRI scan?”
According to Dr Huyen, this technique is typically indicated for patients with abnormal liver nodules of uncertain benign or malignant nature, patients with liver tumours of unspecified type, and patients with colorectal cancer who are at risk of developing liver metastases or already liver metastases.
The programme concluded with a strong message about the importance of close multidisciplinary collaboration. Dr Tran Cong Duy Long, PhD, said: “The diagnostic imaging doctor is the ‘eyes and ears’ of the surgeon.”
Sharing the same view, Dr Vu Truong Son, MSc, Medical Director of FV Hospital, emphasised: “The application of the EOB-MRI technique is a significant step forward, providing FV’s multidisciplinary team with an additional tool to support accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment for patients with liver lesions.”
Performed using the advanced 3.0 Tesla Philips Ingenia Elition X MRI system, EOB-MRI provides high-resolution images that help doctors assess the nature of liver tumours and may reduce the need for invasive biopsy procedures when they are not necessary. Combined with FV Hospital’s multidisciplinary approach, this advanced technique supports safe and personalised treatment planning while helping to minimise unnecessary risks for patients with liver lesions, including those with liver cancer.
WHAT IS FV WEDNESDAY?
FV Wednesday is a regular session series held two to three times a month on Wednesdays. It offers a collaborative space for doctors to meet, share insights, and learn from one another. By discussing complex clinical cases and advanced techniques, the programme helps maintain healthcare quality in line with JCI standards in Vietnam.
Next Session (12:10– 21 October 2026)
