For Dr Nguyen Nhat Nam, PhD, Head of the Endocrinology Unit at FV Hospital, treating chronic conditions goes far beyond simply achieving favourable test results. More importantly, patients need comprehensive disease management to maintain their health and quality of life in the long term.
This medical philosophy stems from his advanced training at Taipei Medical University, together with years of dedicated research and clinical practice. Throughout his work, Dr Nam consistently asks one key question: How can these research findings truly benefit patients?
Choosing endocrinology to care for loved ones
The Medical Residency examination at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City is renowned as one of the most competitive medical examinations in the medical field. That year, Nguyen Nhat Nam ranked among the six highest-scoring candidates. While this achievement opened doors to several popular medical specialities, he chose endocrinology, a field that demands patience and a long-term commitment to patient care.
His motivation arose from a simple, personal wish: to gain the specialist knowledge needed to care for his parents and family members as they reached middle age, when many chronic conditions can begin to develop silently.

Following this, Dr Nam continued his academic journey in Taiwan, earning his PhD in endocrinology from Taipei Medical University. At the graduation ceremony, he was selected to deliver a speech on behalf of the graduating doctoral class, a memorable milestone in his academic career.
Author of internationally recognised research
Dr Nguyen Nhat Nam, PhD, has published extensively in international journals in endocrinology and metabolism. For him, the true value of a study lies not only in its scientific contribution, but also in its ability to address practical clinical challenges.
One of his notable studies investigated the link between classes of diabetes medications and the risk of death from COVID-19. Published in Metabolism – Clinical and Experimental, an international journal specialising in metabolic research, the study provided important clinical evidence to support treatment decisions for people with diabetes during the pandemic.

Another significant contribution is his meta-analysis on the role of pelvic ultrasound in diagnosing precocious puberty in young girls, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The study was subsequently cited by the Korean Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and incorporated into clinical diagnostic and treatment guidelines.
Alongside his research, Dr Nam is a regular speaker at international medical congresses and meetings organised by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), and the Endocrine Society (ENDO). These forums allow him to stay abreast of the latest advances in endocrinology and metabolism and apply practical, evidence-based insights to clinical care in Vietnam.
Comprehensive care for every patient
In his daily clinical practice, Dr Nguyen Nhat Nam, PhD, strictly adheres to evidence-based medicine. Treatment decisions combine up-to-date scientific evidence with specialist clinical experience, tailored to each patient’s individual circumstances.
This approach is particularly important for chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Effective care goes beyond prescribing medication. It requires a long-term monitoring plan, including regular screening for complications.
“If blood glucose is well controlled but potential complications are not identified and monitored, patients can still face serious health consequences. Comprehensive care is always the ultimate goal,” Dr Nam explains.
At FV Hospital, this approach is applied across dedicated specialist pathways. In paediatric endocrinology, he combines pelvic ultrasound with bone-age assessment to help identify precocious puberty early. For oncology patients receiving immunotherapy, he works closely with the Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre to manage the risk of diabetes in patients receiving immunotherapy.
Advancing the Endocrinology Unit towards specialised, multidisciplinary care
Dr Nam’s decision to join FV Hospital was guided by a shared medical vision. In his view, the hospital’s modern facilities, JCI accreditation, and multidisciplinary model create ideal conditions for delivering comprehensive endocrine care.
Looking ahead, the Endocrinology Unit at FV aims to further develop key clinical services, including: Diabetes and prediabetes management, metabolic disorders, obesity, and weight management. Thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal gland disorders. Paediatric endocrinology, specifically precocious puberty and growth disorders. Endocrinology in obstetrics and gynaecology, covering gestational diabetes, thyroid disorders during pregnancy, and endocrine and metabolic conditions in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.
Dr Nam looks forward to working with FV Hospital to develop an advanced, multidisciplinary diabetes and weight management programme. The ultimate goal is to help patients not only manage their conditions effectively, but also maintain their long-term health and quality of life.
