The Shining Star award for July 2026 goes to Ms Trinh Thi Hoa Van, Care Assistant at the Medical East Ward. Her meticulous approach to work, patience with patients, and readiness to help are at the heart of her inspiring story.
Having been with FV Hospital since 2022, Ms Van has spent four years caring for oncology patients at the Medical East Ward. To her, caring for patients extends beyond daily tasks such as changing bed linen, helping them move around, or assisting with meals. It is about being patient, showing understanding, and being there when they need her most. The presence of care assistants often serves as a comforting form of “emotional medicine” for many patients.
Before joining FV, Ms Van spent a long period of time caring for her elderly relatives and young children. Excited by the new challenge, she gradually grew to love and embrace her role as a care assistant. “The work can be tough, but my love for the profession and dedication to our patients give me the motivation to keep going every day,” Ms Van shares.
At the Medical East Ward, one of her most memorable experiences was caring for a demanding elderly lady during a night shift. Although the patient needed to use the bathroom and change her clothes eight times and even asked to brush her teeth at 4:00 am, Ms Van remained patient and gentle throughout. Her heartfelt dedication touched the patient and her family, deepening their trust in the FV team.
Working in an oncology ward also means facing loss on a regular basis. Ms Van does not try to avoid these feelings. She allows herself to feel sad, experience grief, and then share her thoughts with colleagues and family so that she can be heard and supported. Once her heart feels lighter, she knows she has done her very best. Every difficult case and painful moment helps her adapt, stay grounded, and remain calm. This allows her to regain emotional balance and energy to continue her work, bringing comfort and smiles to the patients and families who rely on her care.
Always eager to learn, Ms Van has taught herself basic conversational English to greet and introduce herself to international patients and assist them whenever needed. Her motto is simple: “Work with all your heart, and care for patients with all your soul”. She believes that caring for patients with all your soul is reflected in the simplest things: patience, attention to detail, and a timely word of comfort.
