We are often subjective and ignore the initial signs of ear diseases, leading to serious complications and possible hearing loss. This can cause inconvenience in daily life as well as reduce the patient’s quality of life. It is extremely necessary to get examined immediately when there are signs of ear diseases such as: ear pain, tinnitus, ear discharge, frequent ear itching, or sudden hearing loss. Dr Bernard Colin knows “Early treatment as soon as the disease is detected will help the hearing recovery rate of up to 90%”
He has helped FV Hospital successfully treat many patients with ear-related diseases. Like the case of Mr Nguyen Thanh Phu (32 years old, from Tien Giang), who after 2 years of being tortured by tinnitus, headaches and the feeling of always having the sound of bees ‘buzzing’, he went to be examined at FV Hospital. Following is diagnosis of otosclerosis – a condition in which bones grow abnormally inside the ear, causing hearing loss, a disease that was completely foreign to him. Mr Phu became much panicked when he learned that this disease can cause hearing loss if not treated promptly. Mr Phu needed to have a surgery to hear normally again.

Bernard Colin MD, PhD explains the condition to Mr Phu
Mr Phu is very worried about surgery. But when he was introduced to Dr Bernard Colin, the leading expert in France in the field of treating ear diseases, Mr Phu hoped that he would be treated by this famous doctor.
Dr Colin shared that depending on each person, they may experience some or all of the symptoms of otosclerosis such as tinnitus, dizziness, headaches, nausea; but it is important to determine the disease as well as its severity. It is important to rely on the results of audiometry and CT imaging to determine if you have otosclerosis or not.
To operate on Mr Phu, Dr Colin drilled a small hole with a diameter of 0.5 mm through the base of the stapes bone into the inner ear; then placed a 0.4mm diameter platinum piston into the foot plate, then bent it into the incus. Sponge ear surgery is extremely sophisticated and complex, requiring microsurgery to replace the stapes bone. This surgery was successfully performed by Dr Colin, with the incision inside the ear so no external scars were visible.
Three weeks later, Mr Phu went to FV Hospital’s Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Department for examination. At this follow-up visit, when the mesh was removed from his ear, Mr Phu was extremely satisfied because he could hear normally again.
