Dr Hoang Quang Minh among the first three specialists in Vietnam appointed as a proctor for leadless pacemaker implantation

Medtronic has certified Dr Hoang Quang Minh of FV Hospital’s Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department as a clinical proctor. This recognition places Dr Minh among the first three doctors in Vietnam qualified to train other specialists in this advanced arrhythmia treatment technique.

The clinical proctor certification from Medtronic (USA) affirms Dr Minh’s expertise in cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias management. To be recognised as a proctor, a doctor must demonstrate mastery of the implantation technique, a history of successfully managing complex clinical cases, and the medical teaching skills required to meet international standards. In this new role, Dr Minh will directly train, supervise, and mentor other doctors across Vietnam and the wider region as they begin implanting the Micra™ leadless pacemaker.

Dr Hoang Quang Minh is amongst the first three Vietnamese specialists to receive proctor certification from Medtronic.

The Micra™ leadless pacemaker represents a revolutionary advance for patients with bradycardia (an abnormally slow heart rate). This remarkably small device is delivered directly into a heart chamber through a catheter inserted through a blood vessel in the thigh, eliminating the need for open-chest surgery or pacing leads, and leaving no visible scars. As a result, patients face a much lower risk of device-pocket infection and lead-related complications, compared with conventional pacemaker implantation.

In October 2022, Dr Hoang Quang Minh performed Vietnam’s first atrioventricular-synchronous leadless pacemaker implantation for an 88-year-old patient with atrioventricular (AV) block, resulting in a remarkable recovery and improved quality of life.

At FV Hospital, Dr Hoang Quang Minh specialises in managing complex cardiac arrhythmias, such as tachycardia, bradycardia, and irregular heart rhythms, as well as heart failure. He has successfully treated many patients using advanced techniques, including cardiac electrophysiology (EP) studies, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of arrhythmogenic foci, and implantation of advanced cardiac devices, including implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices.

Reflecting on this milestone, Dr Hoang Quang Minh remarked: “Leadless pacemaker implantation represents the pinnacle of this technology, demanding an exceptionally high degree of precision. This proctor certification, therefore, is not mine alone. It is a recognition of the entire team at FV’s Cardiology & Interventional Cardiology Department.”

In practice, no doctor can achieve a successful intervention alone, without a professional and tightly coordinated team. Seamless collaboration in the catheterisation laboratory and the professionalism of the post-operative nursing team ensure the highest standard of patient safety. “It is FV’s established treatment protocols that give us the confidence to transfer this technology to our colleagues, and to deliver the greatest possible benefit to our patients,” Dr Minh explained.

The clinical excellence of FV’s Cardiology & Interventional Cardiology Department, along with its Cardiac Electrophysiology Unit, was recently reaffirmed by its inclusion in the 2026 Asia-Pacific Best Specialty Hospitals ranking. This achievement is built upon a robust foundation: a state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory, infection control protocols that rank among the most stringent in Vietnam, and an operational framework utilising JCI-standard interventional equipment. Above all, it is the seamless multidisciplinary coordination between doctors, technologists, and nursing staff that secures an exceptionally safe and comprehensive patient experience. In addition to this certification, Dr Hoang Quang Minh’s international reputation is highlighted by his status as a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS), awarded by the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), one of the world’s leading organisations in cardiac electrophysiology. The combination of an internationally credentialled specialist and a department recognised at the continental level assures patients in Vietnam access to advanced treatment solutions without the need to travel abroad.
